THE LANDSCAPE

You're Not Imagining It

Something shifted. Not all at once, but gradually — through the years of a global pandemic, through a world that moved steadily toward screens and away from porches, through life transitions that quietly rearranged who we were and who we were close to.

The numbers make it harder to dismiss. The CDC reports that 1 in 8 adults experiences frequent loneliness, and 1 in 5 lives in a state of ongoing social isolation. Among young adults aged 18–29, loneliness is at its highest — the generation most digitally connected is often the most emotionally alone. Seventy-three percent of people say technology contributes to their sense of disconnection, and yet here we are, scrolling.

75% of adults say they want more spaces specifically designed for genuine community. They just haven't found then yet.

Life transitions do it too. You move to a new city. You leave a job. A relationship ends. A chapter closes. The social scaffolding you didn’t notice holding you up — it just… isn’t there anymore. And starting over feels enormous.

This isn’t a personal failure. It’s a structural one. And we can do something about it.

THE PROBLEM

Most Social Activities Weren't Built for You

Think about the last time you tried to find your people. Maybe it was a happy hour, a Meetup group, an app, a networking event. Maybe you showed up, had a few surface-level conversations, and left feeling more alone than when you arrived. Not because you did anything wrong — but because the format wasn't designed for the kind of connection you were actually looking for.

This isn't a personality problem. It doesn't matter whether you've always preferred fewer, deeper connections — or whether you used to have a full social life and something changed that. A move. A divorce. Years of working remotely. The pandemic. Grief. The result is the same: there's a gap between who you are right now and the community you haven't found yet. Most social settings don't help that gap close. They widen it.

Feeling invisible in a crowd is a specific kind of lonely. It's the kind that makes you quietly wonder if something is wrong with you. There isn't. The person who leaves early isn't antisocial. The one who stayed quiet in a group isn't uninterested. The one who stopped going out entirely isn't broken. They just haven't been given the right environment to open up in. That's not a character flaw. That's a design flaw. And it's fixable.

THE FOUNDER

Why I Built This

As a therapist, I heard the same thing over and over again from the people who sat across from me. "I feel alone — but I can't seem to get out there." I understood it, not just professionally, but personally. I am an introvert. I know what it feels like to genuinely want connection while finding most social settings overwhelming, too loud, too fast, or too unstructured to feel safe in.

What I noticed — both in my clients and in myself — was that the desire to connect was never the problem. The container was. Activities built for extroverts. Events that rewarded volume over depth. Spaces that moved so quickly the quieter people simply got left behind, feeling more isolated at the end of the night than they had at the beginning. I kept thinking: what would it look like if someone designed something differently? Something that made room for the pause, the awkward laugh, the person who takes a little longer to open up?

Kapilina Collective is my answer to that question. It is the safe space I wished had existed for me — and the one I kept wishing I could offer to the people I worked with. Built on the land and water of Maui, held together by intention, and designed for the person who is ready to connect — just on their own terms.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Our Core Beliefs

Learn more

There’s no version of yourself you need to rehearse before showing up. The real you — uncertain, quiet, still figuring it out — is exactly who we’re making room for.

You don't have to perform to belong

Learn more

The people who feel awkward in social settings are usually the ones who feel things deeply. That’s not a liability. It’s the beginning of every meaningful connection.

Awkwardness isn't a flaw-it's proof you care

Learn more

Connection doesn’t fail because people are broken. It fails because the environment wasn’t designed to hold it. Structure, intention, and warmth make all the difference.

The right container changes everything

You're Welcome Here

No performance required. No prerequisites. Just a genuine desire
